Sealants

Preventive dentistry is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. At Wall Street Dentistry, we offer sealants as means to help prevent cavities in your back teeth.

What are sealants?

Sealant material is a tooth-colored liquid coating that becomes hard after it is applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth. The purpose of sealants is to fill in the tiny crevasses of the teeth that are most prone to developing cavities.

Why choose sealants?

Our teeth naturally have varying degrees of pits and crevasses in which bacteria may hide. Even with regular brushing and dental cleanings, it may be difficult to remove bacteria from these hidden areas. Sealants can help smooth out these areas on the chewing surface of the tooth, preventing bacteria from residing and causing decay.

Who should consider sealants?

Even if minimal decay already exists, sealants have proven to be effective in preventing further decay. Sealants are often recommended for children in cases where tooth decay has not yet settled into their teeth, but can be effective for adults as well.

How are sealants applied?

When applying sealants, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned by the dental hygienist. Then, the surface area is dried, and etching material is applied to the tooth that allows the sealant to adhere to the tooth’s surface. Once the sealant is applied, a special light is used to cure and set the material.

What should I expect after sealants are applied?

Following the procedure, you can eat and drink as you normally would. The results are natural looking, and you will never be able to tell that you have sealants on your teeth. During each dental cleaning and exam, we will inspect your sealants to ensure they are properly intact.
